Birth Chart Basics
There’s really no such thing as being born “on the cusp”—unless, of course, you happen to be born on 1 of the 12 days of the year when the Sun changes signs. It’s important to note here, however, that the exact times the Sun moves from one Zodiac sign to the next change slightly each year and, depending on how long ago you were born, the exact date the Sun changed signs may vary with it…
Like the itch you just can’t scratch, any inconjunct (or quincunx) aspect in the birth chart produces such restless energy that, unless channelled into structured activities that help the individual evolve on a personal level, the person will become enslaved in their compulsive fulfillment of social obligations that ultimately exhaust them.
Chiron’s placement shines a light on our past hurts and so-called “baggage,” revealing (should we choose to see it) how our repeated interactions with the world elicit our insecurities and apparent failures.
The outer planets define our unconscious. Aspects between the outer & inner planets in your birth chart reveal much about the unseen self, accessing depths that often remain out of our day-to-day awareness.
The inner planets are those that are closest to the Sun: Moon, Mercury, Venus & Mars. Also called "personal planets," the sign, house placement & aspects to these five planets say much about our individual personalities and ways we express ourselves.
A birth chart is a map of the positions of the planets at the exact time and location you were born. Each person's chart is unique. Accurate interpretation of a birth chart gives the Astrologer a view into the inner life and outer circumstances that affect a person.
“We are born at a given moment, in a given place and, like vintage years of wine, we have the qualities of the year and of the season of which we are born. Astrology does not lay claim to anything more.” — C. G. Jung
The term “aspects” refer to the geometric angles planets form to one another in a birth chart. It’s these angles (read: Aspects) that describe the relationship between those planets (e.g., Mars trine Saturn, Moon sextile Pluto, etc.). In Astrology, the square and opposition indicate hardships, while trines are seen as blessings. Yet, without the challenging aspects, the so-called easy aspects have little value.
In Astrology, there are four Elements—Earth, Air, Water and Fire—that characterize the basic nature of the twelve Zodiac signs. While each sign possesses qualities that are unique unto itself, signs of the same Element share a common thread in terms of self-expression.
The Astrological Modes—Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable—refine & define the expression of each Zodiac Sign. In fact, it’s the combination of Element and Mode that makes each Sign unique, as the Mode filters the way the Elements—Earth, Air, Water & Fire—manifest in the personality. While Signs in the same Element are fundamentally compatible energies, Signs in the same Mode are attractive to us because of the learning we experience through conflict of will.
This article is about those who have heavy concentrations of planets in Mutable signs—Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces—in their birth charts.
